The Timber Transport Forum works in Partnership with community representatives and the forest and timber industries to promote a vibrant and sustainable timber transport sector and to secure social and environmental benefits.

For timber transport to be sustainable, it must contribute to economic activity in the forestry and timber industries while at the same time relating positively to local communities, the environment and our transport infrastructure.

Objectives

To promote sustainable timber transport we will:

1. Support timber transport as a key part of growing the contribution of the forestry and timber industries to the economy.

  • Encourage and prioritise investment in improving timber transport infrastructure.
  • Promote agreed routes maps as the basis for sustaining local roads used for timber haulage
  • Support the development of other modes of timber transport – such as sea and rail

  • Encourage the retention and development of a skilled workforce

2. Improve the sustainability of timber transport by minimising or mitigating social and environmental impacts.

  • Promote good practice in managing timber transport
  • Encourage the use of lower impact timber haulage vehicles

  • Share developments in net-zero technologies relevant to the timber transport sector

  • Promote a safe operating environment
  • Engage positively with local communities

To deliver these objectives we must:

  • Maintain and strengthening the partnership ensuring that all appropriate stakeholders are involved in our work
  • Influence policy makers and decision takers at national, regional and local levels
