Funding for infrastructure improvement comes from local authorities road /highways departments, public and private forest owners and, in Scotland, from the Scottish Government’s Strategic Timber Transport Fund (STTF).
The STTF also supports timber transport officer posts, the Timberlink coastal shipping service and other intermodal projects.
The STTF is managed and administered by Scottish Forestry with assistance from the Timber Transport Forum. It has disbursed over £58m to around 300 projects since 2005. Details of available funding together with reports and case studies can be found on the Scottish Forestry website.
In Wales the Tywi Forest Timber Transport Forum received funding and resources from Natural Resources Wales, Carmarthenshire County Council and in-kind contributions from the private sector to take forward infrastructure improvement projects.
In the north of England, the timber transport groups are looking to identify sources of funding to address constraints and pinch points in the local road network.
